A work in progress...

This current project is for my mother in San Diego, CA. She is a fan of these blue poppies, as am I. She said she first spotted some growing at her beach cottage on the Long Beach Peninsula in Washington two Summers ago. I've never seen any in person myself, but their color is captivating. It will hang on the wall above her bedroom fireplace apparently.

It is rare I get the opportunity to paint these days as I am still working on a PhD at the University of Rochester. I am a fourth year grad student. Feels like 10 years.

Between brewing batches of beer with Jason, I worked on these pallet knife paintings as my hand was still healing from carpal tunnel surgery over the 2012 Summer. This was the only way I could still paint--pallet knives can be held quite loosely. These hung (actually, many still do) in a restaurant close to home, Chocolate and Vines. The proprietors, a great couple Mickey and Danielle, allow me to hang work I don't have space for at home. These paintings were/are being sold to benefit a charity I raise money for, Standing Tall. I raised $1,800.00 on behalf of this charity for the 2012 NYC ING marathon, before it was cancelled due to hurricane Sandy. I haven't decided if I'll run it next year or not--I was a bit disappointed in the handling of the marathon and that it took as long as it did for the promoters to cancel. Should have been rescheduled as soon as severe weather warnings were announced, in my opinion. Anyhow, great charity. I highly recommend viewing their site. They have an incredible program and are providing outstanding academic services to children with neuromotor disabilities.

Insofar as the clown goes, I have been (on and off) creating a series of monochromatic circus paintings inspired by vintage photographs. I have blue and yellow, thus far. The series is looking at the phenomenon of psychological undermining and emotional distancing that happens when people create facades. There are limitless reasons for these protective measures. I've been studying transactional theories for sometime now and I'm interested in knowing the ways in which personality and interaction patterns are influenced, formed, and eventually crystallized by purposeful creation of atypical personas.

Oil paintings on canvas--before I discovered the superior qualities of inflexible painting surfaces such as wood and cork. I've also discovered I rather prefer textured surfaces to smooth most of the time. They lend themselves to a more organic and less contrived finished product.
